I’m thrilled to be attending and participating in ScienceOnline2011 – the fifth annual conference on science and the web in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. My first time! I’ll be leading a session with Joanne Manaster on communicating science with humor, and I’ll be speaking/performing at the Saturday night banquet. I’m looking forward to reconnecting with some friends and making some new ones.

Tim Westergren of Pandora & the Music Genome Project

My newest video for Time Magazine is about Pandora, the internet radio service. I visited the Oakland offices of Pandora and spoke with founder and Chief Strategy Officer Tim Westergren. We discussed various recommendation engines used by other companies and what makes Pandora’s Music Genome Project different.

TIME 100′s Elon Musk

Time Magazine has announced the Time 100 – their annual list of the most influential people of the year. It’s divided into four main categories: Leaders, Heroes, Artists, and Thinkers.

One of those Thinkers is Elon Musk, co-founder of PayPal and current CEO of Tesla Motors and SpaceX.

Jon Favreau – director of the Iron Man movies – wrote the entry on Musk, having used him as a model for the billionaire Tony Stark character. David Clair and I made a new video about him:

It’s about Elon Musk and SpaceX – and we were almost finished with it when the topic exploded into the news a week or so ago – Obama, the budget, the future of NASA, Ares and contracting out space flights to private companies. They Might Be Giants Video for Time

Here Comes Science is supposedly a kids’ album but it’s my favorite They Might Be Giants album. I love it. And I had the opportunity to interview John and John at their Brooklyn rehearsal studio, and attend one of their family shows at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Herschel Space Observatory – Time Magazine’s Best Inventions

Time Magazine has released its list of the 50 Best Inventions of 2009. It’s worth checking out – tons of interesting stuff.

Topping the list is NASA’s Ares Rocket. Yay! And the Herschel Space Observatory is also on it, which happens to be the subject of our latest video for Time.com.

Herschel is a European Space Agency mission but, like so many space ventures today, it’s an international collaboration. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory developed two of the three instruments with which it will study the far-infrared and submillimeter wavelengths – analyzing some of the coldest objects in space, hoping to shed light on star formation. And, cooled by liquid helium to just a fraction above absolute zero, Herschel’s instruments are themselves some of the coldest objects in space – at least for the next three years, til the helium runs out.

We visited JPL and CalTech to speak to Paul Goldsmith, the NASA Herschel Mission scientist.

Giant Insect Ambassadors for the Rainforest

The Scientific Mind Behind FlashForward

Our most recent video for Time.com is about the new ABC series, “FlashForward.” The show is based on the 1999 novel by Canadian science fiction author Robert J. Sawyer, whom we met this summer at the Launch Pad Astronomy Workshop.

I went down to Los Angeles to meet Rob on the set of the show. Well, actually, it was a location shoot for, I believe, the 7th episode of the first season (yeah, I said, “first”!).

In Rob’s book, an experiment at the Large Hadron Collider causes everyone in the world to experience a bit of their own future. In the television series, we do not yet know what causes the flashforward but since Sawyer is a fan of science as well as science fiction, we took the opportunity to talk about a story that has captivated the press for the past couple years – that the LHC will create micro-black holes that will swallow up the Earth.
